There are fewer time-consuming distractions based on interpersonal and group dynamics. For this reason, motivation is usually high and team members have confidence in their ability to attain goals. In general, all participants accepted and shared common goals. It is possible for the leader to step away and only endorse the final decision of the team before its implementation, control based on a result and celebrate success.

In this stage typically team members are ready to leave causing significant change to the team structure, membership, or purpose and the team during the last week of class. While the group continues to perform productively they also need time to manage their feelings of termination and transition. Compromising during the storming stage resolves conflict and pushes the team to forward. Facilitate team discussions and remind team members to be respectful of others’ opinions and comments.

In the performing stage, members are confident, motivated and familiar enough with the project and their team that they can operate without supervision. Everyone is on the same page and driving full-speed ahead towards the final goal. As new tasks arise, groups may still experience a few conflicts. If you’ve already dealt with disagreement before, it will probably be easier to address this time. During the norming stage, people start to notice and appreciate their team members’ strengths.

A group might be happily Norming or Performing, but a new member might force them back into Storming, or a team member may miss meetings causing the team to fall back into Storming. The team leader takes the role of the curator, stepping aside and giving more freedom of action to the team. At this stage, the team negotiate and make decisions among themselves.
Mastering The Key Stages Of Group Development
At this stage, team leaders can begin delegating tasks easily and seeing growth within their teams. Team leaders need to ensure they address any major changes to reduce the possibility of digressing to earlier stages. Anticipating team efficiency can be tough, but understanding the needs of the individuals that comprise the teams allow leaders to keep their team at peak performance. The next phase, if you overcome the storming stage, is the “coming around” or norming stage. Here your team is developing the skills for task completion, and morale is beginning to rise. Your sales team is being supportive of one another and beginning to be more collaborative rather than self-centered.
This can decrease motivation and effort by drawing attention away from tasks. In some cases storming (i.e., disagreements) can be resolved quickly. Other times a team never leaves this stage and becomes stuck and unable to do its work. Patience and consideration toward team members and their views go a long way toward avoiding this. Some teams do come to an end, when their work is completed or when the organization’s needs change.
Stage 4: Performing At Peak Productivity
Understand your people’s needs and make team management your greatest strength. Even in this stage, there is a possibility that the team may revert back to another stage. For example, it is possible for the team to revert back to the “storming” stage if one of the members starts working independently.
Think back to your high school days when you were assigned a group project in one of your classes. You were given a task to complete and then challenged to complete that task with other people . So many issues arose when the team started working together, and it seemed more trouble to function as a unit than as an individual. If you can make it past the storming phase, you’re rewarded with a truly healthy working relationship on the other side, in the norming phase. People start to resolve their differences, appreciate colleagues’ strengths, and gain true trust of one another.
